I made an animation video!

For anyone wondering why I didn't post anything on Friday, I was finishing this little doodad.

The audio's a bit shit, but that's what happens when you don't have a fancy microphone and are attempting narrating something.

Here you are! I had equal parts fun and aggravation making this thing, and I hope you feel the same way watching this.

Disney and the Princesses

I grew up a big fan of Cinderella.

I had no other Disney Princess options, spare Belle whom my older sister always barred me from being. So I spent my childhood wanting to be just like the French peasant-turned-princess, to the point I even spent time cleaning the small patch of tiled floors in our kitchen on all fours singing "Sing Sweet Nightingale" to pass the time.

What wasn't to love, really? Cinderella's calm, loving, hardworking, and patient. But she's also a more realistic princess than Snow and her endless lovely charm. Cinderella got fed up; she tried to fight for herself, and she found her prince after sneaking out on her own! I enjoyed the rebellion as a girl!

Where this love of the blonde beauty became dangerous, however, was in how I began to view myself on a physical aspect. I have an older sister with lips as red as the rose, skin as pale as snow, and (at the time period) hair as bright blonde as the sun. On the other hand, there was me: hair as black as sin and skin I couldn't see as anything other than the color of dirt.

So I'd spend hours on end in our small bathroom trying to cover up every ounce of skin with my sister's white powder, until she started hiding it. Later, I spent time dipping my hands into flower and wishing it would seep into my pours so I could be as pale as Cinderella, and my sister.

The most infuriating part was knowing I could've ended up like her--I could've gotten my dad's ginger Spanish genes, but I was stuck with my own Native Latin American roasted tone.

It wasn't until I asked my mother how I could make myself as pale as my sister that she sat me down and told me the Virgin Mary was nicknamed "la Virgen Morena de Guadalupe" in Mexico ("Or Lady of Guadalupe", an apparition of the Virgin Mary). He logic was that if God chose a brown lady to carry her son, then it must not matter if I'm a toaster shade of people.

I never hated myself for what I couldn't change again, but I did have problems looking at Cinderella for a few years.

The point behind racial diversity in a Disney line up isn't really because children from other races cannot relate to a white Princess. I related to a white princess! It just comes down to not wishing they didn't look different.

I don't think I can stress enough how bothersome it can be to be a darker skin tone with Spanish blood peppering my family tree.

And I know I'm not an individual case: Color is no longer an allowed subject under my aunt's roof because my little cousin asked her mommy why she can't be as white as her little brother, often praised and called beautiful for his complexion.

Could this have been fixed by raising your children differently? Yes and no: society itself would have to chose a more realistic standard of beauty to live by. In Mexico, European-looking actors and actrisess are always the leads of every TV show, while more inigenous looking people are maids and common, uneducated folk in rural villages. The United States tends to only use tolkien-minorities in every show, even proliferating the "dark guy always dies first!" trope.

Disney can't fix all of society's problems--the vast majority of that preference for a lighter skin tone comes down to cultural roots. But what a company that firmly encompasses the childhood of millions of children can do is change around the skin tone of their characters.

Now I've heard the arguments behind not doing so: Disney's a company! They need to sell their product! More people will relate to a white over a non-white princess! 3D animation is very limited in what it can do!

Most of these are true. Spare excuse two.

Saying that variation in skin tone would kill what a person can relate to, or that changing skin tones would cater to specific races is, well, racist. This is not only erasing the rest of the world outside Europe (because the US is so diverse I laugh in the face of immigration protesters), but is also insinuating a darker skin tone cannot be registered as human.

Tell that to the girls trying to powder their skin lighter.

As for what 3D animation can do: if Disney could make Paperman and Tangled happen, they can sure as hell find a way to darken skin tones if they feel like it! Don't bullshit me with that.

Paperman happened!

Brave happened!

These movies exist!

Why not try out this diversity thing some more? At least have a character who spent a lot of time out in the sun for a change, no?

Hello!

I'm finally drawing something! <3

Guess the actor.

I've used: sketch pencils, prisma colored pencils, and regular ballpoint pens.

My room is now a giant art mess, and my spine and pride have both felt better days, but it's also totally worth it!

This image is slightly older than the full work, but I'll be showing you more tomorrow. :)

 I've decided to make some new sketches over the last few days and have steadily grown surprised of how my skills have grown.

So here you are, my darlings!

Have my sketchbook

I've been neglecting you as of late, haven't I?

Please forgive me for this, I did have some work ahead of me! That and I just couldn't think of what to do.
So to make it up to you, I decided I'd share my sketchbook and "??? month story" revolving around the things I make and pass off as works of art.

As you may or may not know, I wanna be an animator when I grow up (or should I say when I get older, since my 18th birthday just past?)! Because of how great of a school it is, I really want to make it into Sheridan in a year or two, and to do so, I've been studying my art technique some.

I got this sketchbook earlier this year after my last one filled up and spent most of my time writing lyrics from David Bowie songs in the first three pages, but there are some sketches!

By this time, I had already heard about Sheridan and had spent a few months trying to life drawing and failing miserably at it (or at least translating it into my regular stuff).

After this, I found a couple blogs helping out Sheridan hopefuls (links in my notes), and found

pages with character design notes.

Belongs to Disney, of course. I'm nowhere near this cool.

Lead to this change in my sketches! It's not perfect, but it's working out a bit better (I think).

I decided to make some more doodles and even a lazy comic book sketch of myself as a shameless self insert in Doctor Who.

Afterwards, I finally managed to install my tablet onto my new computer and started to draw away on Sketchbook!

This are pretty much the only interesting bits for now, spare maybe my best friend's birthday present! It'll be done in the weeks to come, so I'll be making an update with more on that and other little doohikies I'm daring to call "side projects" to sound professional.

No seriously, they're just for fun. I have too much time on my hands at the moment.

I did enter, yet I have no idea how the hell the system works!

Do they warn you beforehand? Are ALL of the thousand + votes up for the public to vote upon? I don't know. I really don't.

But in the end, I really don't CARE.
I just want people to vote.

I want to hold the hands of every person who submitted and tense up excitedly at the desperation to see who is on top! I want to clap for the winners and drool over all the amazing artwork.

I want to laugh like an idiot for ever believing I could win.

But mostly, I want to win.

I want that miracle at the end of the movies where the underdog wins, and we're always our own tragic underdog because we have no one else to really cheer on. Not in all cases.


I don't have a picture of mine, because I was finished and didn't think twice about it, so I have no example.

• Essentially, it's a little Mexican kid with short hair--I don't blame you if you confuse her for a boy. It happened by my own mother--smiling up at the skies as the two "OO"s.

This year's theme was "the best day ever" and I chose the day we land on Mars!

Thank you, Hank Green, for convincing me it was a damn awesome idea! Also, for making great music. You need a song about the curiosity rover--look at me, addressing Hank Green, as though he's ever going to read this! Aren't I cute?

Hello all, it's Nick!

I'm currently trying to raise up some funds for college, since I want to study animation, but art schools in my home state have a tendency of being a bit, well, expensive.

ART STUFF!

Stuff! I have improved on my artwork! Huzzah!
I also now have an instagram (same name, if you're interested. I use the same name for everything).

I am artist. . . .thing.

Sometimes I feel as though I'm cheating myself when I say "I'M AN ARTIST, LULZZ!!" and never post any art. Like people are judging and I have something to prove.

Realistically speaking, no one gives a shit.

But I do, so I'll be posting up some things I sorta still like.

I don't know if I can put up any of my AP porfolio up before turning it in, but to be honest it's all I've had time to do at the moment. I'd like to know if it's okay before putting anything up online, so for now have some old stuff! :D
