Superman's comeback in "Man of Steel" is set for great things!

Ask what I love most in this world, and in that list  you'll undoubtedly see the word "comics".

Specifically, you'll see the word "Superman" underlined a couple times as my favorite. I am fully prepared for a wave of hate, what with Supe's bad rep: "He's a perfect boyscout!" "There's no negative sides!" "He has no character development!" "No moral dilema", "Nothing BAD ever happens to him." ect.

There's a list about ten miles long, and part of it stems from the fact there's yet to be a good Superman movie painting the hero in a new light. All the superheroes we know and love today were at one point completely obscured to those unexposed to comics, or painted in a negative light due to the lack of a good movie.

Superman's quite arguably the hero stuck with the worst of it all.

With the boy in blue turning 75 today (and not having a good movie since 1978), I can hardly blame people for their dislike of America's first "Superhero". Which is one of the many reasons I and the rest of the Superman fans are itching for this movie! And it is promising to be great.

So far, it seems like they're sticking to the Batman formula: make you fall in love with the main character, introduce the arch-nemisis in the second, and close off with a bow in the third.

Superman's origin story's one that fascinates me for a number of reasons. I refuse to say a word on it, especially because the movie itself seems to be based on one of my favorite retellings of it. In fact, the trailer to the right seems to do a pretty good job of showing that which I'm itching to put into words: Superman's a lonely outcast with great, yearning to fit in. Actually, that's an understatement.

"Can't I just pretend I'm your son?" If that doesn't kill you on the inside--the trembling shock at finding out you're not just different, but completely at utterly alone. Having to face that. The love Superman still receives from his family despite it. That is what I love about the origin story.

Honestly, I'd say the best Superman story's an equivalent to the Doctor's story from Doctor Who: a "lonely God" character who's really uncomfortable with being called a God and spends his life saving humanity from destruction of all sorts, while simultaneously being in awe of the very people he's saving (I am ready for your hate spam).

As sappy as the above paragraphs are, the really fascinating part of this is humanity's reaction to the megalomaniac Kryptonian anti-thesis to Kal-El, General Zod (Michale Shannon). I mean honestly, just look at this preview trailer! Zod promises to be the Scarecrow of Batman Begins!

The "friendly rivalry" (as Supes would call it) the Superman movie's trying to give the King of the Superhero franchises, The Dark Knight Trillogy, is most definitely welcome with me. Especially with the possibility of having a "World's Finest" movie come out!

How do I continue without geeking out?

There are some things left out from the classic comicbook series: the Daily Planet for one. It seems to have gone the way of the. . . . well, the Daily Planet! In the New 52, the Daily Planet was bought out by Morgan Edge and merged with the Galaxy Broadcasting System: the Daily Planet graduated into a News Station!*

How to express how happy I am the nostalgia won't be too heavy? A little's good and welcome--necessary! But too much could lead to another 2006 disaster, and could easily make the movie the ridiculous--like the notion of a man being able to keep the position of  full-time print reporter while simultaneously disappearing all the time!

Maybe if he were a photographer, but a writer?!^

All and all, I'm ecstatic over the movie! Henry Cavil's going to be a stupendous Superman! Or at least I hope, especially because the movie comes out on my birthday.

With love (and excitement)
Nikola Strange

NOTES:
* This isn't a new thing, mind you! The Daily Planet merged once before in the Silver Age of Comics.

^Haha! Spiderman reference! High five!! . . . No? Okay.
